Loggerhead turtles: import of samples of liver and fat

Commissioned:

Report no: Non-detriment finding

Published: 09.03.2021

Key message:

The survival of the species Caretta caretta ( Loggerhead turtles) will not be detrimented by importing 200 samples of liver and fat from these turtles in order to evaluate the impact on environmental pollution on marine turtles.

Thus concludes VKM in a scientific risk assessment, a non-detriment finding (NDF).

The samples for import were collected from stranded animals or animals that were caught as bycatch by fisheries.

VKM has assessed the conservation status, including conservation and management measures, of Loggerhead turtles in the area where the samples were collected.

The report was commissioned by the Norwegian Environment Agency (NEA). The NEA is the national Management Authority for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora (CITES).

VKM is the Scientific Authority for CITES in Norway. VKM prepares NDF-reports in line with published methodology from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and CITES.
