Import of hunting trophies from scimitar-horned oryx

Commissioned:

Report no: Non-detriment finding

Published: 10.01.2023

Key message:

As of today, it is unlikely that the import of hunting trophies of scimitar-horned oryx (Oryx dammah) from South Africa to Norway will be detrimental to the species' further survival.

This is the conclusion of the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food and Environment (VKM).

The scimitar-horned oryx is classified as "extinct in the wild" on the global red list of endangered species. Scimitar-horned oryx is part of an extensive reintroduction program, where animals born in captivity are released into areas where the species previously lived. South Africa is not part of the saber antelope's natural habitat. The hunting of animals bred in captivity in South Africa will most likely not affect conservation measures or the reintroduction of the species to its natural habitats.

The assignment was made on behalf of the Norwegian Environment Agency, which is the administrative authority for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES), in Norway.

VKM is the scientific authority for CITES in Norway and prepares non detriment findings (NDF) in line with methodology published by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and CITES.

VKM is regularly requested to prepare NDF-reports related to import permit applications for scimitar-horned oryx trophies from South Africa. The most recent NDF will always be accessible from this website, and the report is updated if new data indicate that the species situation changes.
